Parking in River North

River North is Chicago's densest dining and nightlife district — dozens of restaurants, bars, and galleries packed between the Merchandise Mart and the Chicago River. That popularity makes evening parking genuinely competitive, especially Thursday through Saturday when the dinner and bar crowds overlap.

Street parking exists but is mostly metered with short time limits, and garage entrances line Superior, Ontario, Illinois, and Grand. If you are staying more than a couple of hours, a garage is almost always the better move — River North is one of the neighborhoods where tow trucks and ticket writers stay busiest.

What to expect to pay, and when to arrive

For evening plans, budget roughly $20–$40 to park within a few blocks of the restaurant corridor; valet at popular spots runs on top of that. Weekday daytime is driven by the office crowd — look for early-bird specials, typically $15–$25 if you are in before 9 AM and out by early evening.

Weekends usually shift to flat-rate pricing, which is simpler but not always cheaper. A practical tip: garages closer to the river and the Mart tend to price lower than the ones in the heart of the Hubbard Street bar strip, and the extra three-minute walk pays for the difference.

The transit alternative

River North is exceptionally well served by transit. The Brown and Purple Lines stop at Merchandise Mart, the Red Line at Grand is a short walk south, and the 29 State, 65 Grand, and 66 Chicago buses cross the neighborhood. If your plans involve more than one stop — dinner, then a gallery, then a bar — transit or a short walk beats re-parking a car twice.

For groups of three or four, splitting a garage spot is often comparable to four transit fares, so driving makes sense — just book ahead on busy nights rather than hunting on arrival.
